TwitterMCE – Twitter on TV from Windows Media Center – Review

I’ll never write myself tweets while watching TV, but reading the ones I follow might prove useful from time to time. I have been looking for a while for Windows Media Center plug-ins to improve my TV watching experience, and TwitterMCE from MCEZone seemed to be a rather useful one, so I went ahead and install it.

Description:

TwitterMCE will allow you to post tweets, view friends, followers, timelines, profiles and delete tweets within Media Center. The latest version adds a new video mode which allows you to tweet while watching TV. Other new features are going to full screen mode by pressing the up button on the remote, viewing what’s on your home page and viewing when someone mentioned you. This is a MCML plugin and you must have one of the following operating systems, Microsoft Windows Vista Premium, Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate or Microsoft Windows 7 Media Center.

Installation and functionality:

By default, TwitterMCE is installed in Extras Library. The first time is launched, it will prompt you for the log in info, and if you didn’t donate, it will display a 15 seconds NAG screen every time you launch it. It will then present you with two choices: Standard and Video Mode. The Standard Mode will use the full screen to display your tweets/friends/etc, the Video Mode is less intruding, so it would be useful while watching a movie.

Wishes:

  • auto-login (maybe use the NAG screen break to perform the log-in communication in the background)
  • capability to increase/decrease the font size to fit more tweets on one screen

Conclusion:

All in all, a nice little plug-in to add to Media Center functionality, Recommended if you are using Twitter on a daily basis.
