Onkyo TX-NR809 Review – THX Certified 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver with 8 HDMI inputs

My beloved Pioneer Elite VSX-82TXS just lost a channel and anyway, it was time for a new receiver. I needed something with similar specs to the good old 82TXS but updated to the 2011 requirements (Internet connectivity, 3D support, etc). I prefer connected equipment when possible plus a bunch of HDMI inputs and, when Amazon had Onkyo TX-NR809 on sale I jumped on it. A couple of days later a large and heavy box found its way to my door and I played with its content for the last two weeks. The results are described in this Onkyo TX-NT809 Review.

Throughout the review I’ll make brief comments regarding how the new Onkyo TX-NR809 compares to my old Pioneer Elite VSX-82TXS. I think these two receivers belong to the same class and it should be interesting to see how the technology evolved in the last 5 years. Read More…

How to root / install custom roms and add Android Market for CVS Craig CMP 738a $75 Android tablet

I just got a very cheap Craig CMP 738a tablet from CVS, and, after the $25 coupon code, the total came to be $75 before taxes. CVS is not a place where you would expect to find hi-tech items, but I wanted a cheap tablet to play with and, after I got bored, to give to my 7 old son without the fear that if he breaks it I’ll be too upset. I played with it for about a week (a full review to follow) but the included software sucks: Slow, no official Google Android market, outdated apps. There are some custom ROMs available (that also come with root access) so I decided to try them, and, since the process of installing a custom ROM is not always easy, I decided to write this tutorial and post clear and easy to follow instructions, documenting each step with screenshots. The benefits of adding a custom ROM is mainly better app compatibility, speed and official Android Market.

1. What is Craig 738a?

Craig 738a is a very cheap tablet that can be purchased at CVS pharmacy for $99. There is always a coupon for $25 off available around the web, so you’ll Read More…

Sony SMP-N100 Review – Network Media Player with Wi-Fi, Netflix and Hulu Plus

Since I cut the cable cord a while ago, I am constantly looking for solutions to improve my TV watching experience. At this point, I am using a PS3 in living room and ROKU / WD TV Live Plus boxes in every room I have TVs. Recently Sony released a new media streamer box that offers streaming functionality similar (but improved in several ways) to their flagship entertainment product – Playstation 3.  The box is rather cheap at only $89  so I decided to give it a try. It got shipped fast enough and the results are described in this review.
The box includes the main media streamer box, the external power brick adapter, the remote, user manual and the good old red white yellow analog audio video cable. Why Sony did not include a HDMI cable in the year 2011 is beyond me.

Deal of the Day – HP V5061u 1080p Digital Camcorder – 3 inches touchscreen $99 shipped

Todays’s deal of the day consists in the cheapest 1080p digital camera I have seen (while being a decent quality at the same time) from Amazon for $99 shipped and no taxes in most states. The camera is a HP V5061u 1080p flash memory based, features a 5MB CMOS sensor, a 3 inches LCD touchscreen with 960 x 240 resolution that can rotate to 270 degrees so you can take your self portrait (this is a nice touch and usually reserved for more expensive equipment), stereo microphone and a weight of only 9.2 Ounces.

Another interesting feature – a DUAL SD card slot for more memory on the road. The output is HDMI so you won’t need any fancy converters and comes with rechargeable batteries but you can use a couple of AA batteries when the main ones run out of juice, again an interesting and quite useful capability.
