How to mount Windows Phone 7 as a USB drive and side-load your media directly
The smart hackers from Windows Phone Central discovered an interesting and very useful method to mount your Windows Phone 7 as a USB drive and side-load your media files directly onto the device, as with any other USB memory stick. The way to do it is via a Windows registry hack where you need to change three registry keys:
Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB and find ZuneDriver, then change the following three keys:
- Change ShowInShell from 0 to 1
- Change PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell from 1 to 0
- Change EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1
You can then connect your Windows Phone 7 device and it will be recognized as a standard drive.
As it is, the method only works on the computer where you changed the registry but it is nice nonetheless.
