Well, folks, we were always afraid that this day will eventually come and unfortunately it finally happened. AT&T decided to strike back against unauthorized tethering (i.e. paid) and while at first they only seem to issue a warning, there is a sign for worse things to come. Many users are reporting that they received a warning text message (“AT&T Free Msg: Did you know tethering your Smartphone to a computer requires a tethering plan? Pls call 888-860-6789 for details or visit att.com/dataplans.”) or an e-mail from AT&T telling them to stop using it or start paying for the official tethering plan. At this point it is only a warning but it is just the beginning.
Apparently, if you don’t start paying, AT&T will automatically enroll you in the 4GB DataPro plan for a painful $45 / month rate?
Beside obvious side effects like an end of the business model that fed companies developing tethering solutions for the jailbreak phones, I have a feeling that I will soon switch my carrier to a more lenient one and I also won’t be alone.
Check after the break for a sample e-mail from AT&T. Read More…
