New Copyright Law might make illegal streaming a federal felony

Today, the White House proposed an update to US copyright law making illegal audio or video streaming a federal felony and enable FBI agents to use wiretapping against suspects in the process.

While the law is in the proposition stage for now and has yet to pass, it is not yet known the degree of enforcement the government is willing to perform and only a lawyer can provide an informed opinion. However, you might imagine nightmarish situations in which you might be described as a felon just by watching a YouTube home video, but with a copyrighted track as a background. The law if applied literally could shift the burden of enforcing copyright contracts to the government and you can imagine Kafkian scenarios of streaming police liberally wiretapping households under the pretext of checking for intellectual property thefts.

Sony Blu-ray players get VUDU streaming

Fortunately for us, today’s toys are getting smarter and smarter (no telling when they’ll take over the world though) and must have features like Netflix / Hulu Plus / VUDU streaming are finding their way into more and more connected devices. The latest to get VUDU love are the Blu-ray players from Sony (PS3 had VUDU for quite a while already). The latest upgrade includes VUDU in all its glory including DD 5.1 sound and 1080p streaming (up to VUDU HDX). For the models that are 3D able, you’ll obviously get 3D capability.
